Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE)
Structure and Components
The SQE is divided into two key stages: SQE1 and SQE2.
SQE1 focuses on legal knowledge, testing candidates through multiple-choice questions covering subjects such as business law, property law, and the legal system of England and Wales.
SQE2 assesses practical legal skills, including client interviewing, advocacy, case and matter analysis, legal research, and written advice. This part of the exam requires candidates to demonstrate their ability to apply legal knowledge in practical scenarios.
Qualification
To qualify as a solicitor under the SQE framework, candidates must: hold a degree or equivalent qualification in any subject, not necessarily law, pass both parts of the SQE assessment, complete two years of qualifying work experience (QWE).
QWE can be gained in up to four different legal organizations and in various forms, including paralegal work, placements, or legal clinics, and demonstrate suitable character and suitability, ensuring that all qualifying solicitors are fit to practice.
