Assessment Specification, Study Resources, and Practice Areas
To obtain the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) Part 2, also known as SQE2, candidates must follow a series of steps outlined by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). Here's a brief overview of the process:
First, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria for the SQE. You must have completed or be exempt from the SQE1. Register for the SQE through the SRA's official portal.
After registration, you can book the SQE2 assessment. The exams are conducted at specified times during the year, and candidates must book their slots in advance.
SQE2 focuses on practical legal skills and is divided into two main parts: oral and written assessments. The oral assessments include client interviews and advocacy, while the written assessments cover case and matter analysis, legal research, legal writing, and legal drafting.
On the day of the assessment, candidates will perform the tasks within a specified timeframe. Oral assessments are conducted over two half-days, and written assessments take place over three half-days.
Each assessment is graded ↗ on a scale from A (superior performance) to F (poor performance). The marks are then converted into numerical scores. Both skills and application of law are weighted equally in the final assessment.
To pass SQE2, candidates must achieve the overall pass mark. There is no separate pass mark for oral and written components; they are assessed as a whole.
Once you pass SQE2, you must complete the remaining steps to qualify as a solicitor, including any required work experience and application to the roll of solicitors.
